The village of VroomshoopVroomshoop was founded around 1859. However, the name Vroomshoop already existed in 1772. The village is located at the “Overijssels Kanaal”,where the branch Zwolle-Vroomshoop turns into the branch Almelo-de Haandrik. Vroomshoop was founded because of the peat grounds. For several years people earned their living in production of peat. After this period they changed to agriculture. In particular the “Groninger” farmers were very important in those days. You can still find some of these typical “Groninger” farms at “de Tonnendijk”.

There is a story that tells that Vroomshoop owes its name to a group of monks, who lived in a Middle Age monastery named “Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Groot Galilea” in Sibculo from where they traveled to ”The Sint Agnietenberg” in Zwolle.
These monks, who often stayed in the peat area between Den Ham and Sibculo, called this upland area “Vrooms Hoop” or “Den Vromen Hope”.
Nowadays Vroomshoop developed itself as the most important shopping village of Twenterand . From the entire region people visit Vroomshoop to do their shopping. The variety of shops is very extensive. “De Hammerstraat” and also “Het Julianaplein“ and ”Het Amaliaplein” have a very inviting look because of the wide sidewalks and the many extra parking places which were built in 2010.
Not only the present but also the past is very important to many ” Vroomshopers.”
To remember the past at “Het Zwolsekanaal” the old locks have been replaced. It is a sweet memory to a place were in earlier days many romances started. Also the transient harbor breathes during the summertime a very friendly atmosphere.
