Also very particular were the trading contacts between Vriezenveen and people of Sint Petersburg in the former Soviet Union between 1720 until 1917. Those trading-people of Vriezenveen were called “Rusluie”, named after the country ”Rusland” (Soviet Union).
During this period of time a variety of shops and trading-posts were established in Sint Petersburg. In the “Historisch Museum” you can still find a lot of information about this important and well-known period of Vriezenveen.
In 1905 there was a big inferno in Vriezenveen: over 200 wooden and country houses were destroyed. The houses of the establishment and the “Rusluie” were the only few resistant against the flames.
One of them can still be found today and is called the “Peddemors boerderij”.
Located on the western part of Vriezenveen you can find the “Leemansmolen”, a windmill of the 19th. Century.
Nowadays Vriezenveen, a village of 6.2 km. length, has an important variety of shops and inviting terraces.
There are several Museums, all worth visiting. In august the holiday season is ended with a popular local market, visited by lots of people.
The local language of Vriezenveen is called “Vjeans” and is completely different from other languages in the area.
This was caused by immigrants from the county of Friesland and because Vriezenveen was very isolated.
