Den Ham, a pleasant surprise

Den Ham is located in the precious culture landscape Vecht and Regge and to the North side it borders the special natural area "Eerder Achterbroek", with forests, heaths, rippling brooks and sandy plains. The environment of Den Ham is because of its variaty of landscape very suitable for walking, cycling, canoeing or horseback riding.
The big choice between very well-maintained campinggrounds, special accommodations for groups, holiday cottages and Bed & Breakfast addresses makes it easy for you to find yourself a nice place to spend your holiday here.

Den Ham is a village in the community of Twenterand and has approximately 5800 inhabitants.
In 1333 Den Ham is first mentioned (as Parish) in the Loan Act of the Lord of Egede. The center point of the old village is the charming brink, with its oldest building: the Gothic Tower of the Reformed Church (built between 1325 and 1425). Agriculture and livestock were the most important ways of living until far into the 19th century.
Nowadays most of the population is protestant. However, there are proves that not so long ago the religious condition of the village was so very bad that it was known in the region as “wicked Den Ham." Around 1830 Den Ham was in a state of craziness. The village was very poor and was, being the last stop on the trading route to Germany, notorious for the scum that wandered around. Their behavior was characterized by excessive alcohol consumption (there were eight hostels) and there was a lot of smuggling going on. Nowadays (in december) Den Ham presents an event named ” Historisch Schouwspel”. On that day, the history of the village is been performed by 200 "Hammenaren" in historical costumes.
In summer, in July and August (on 4 Wednesdays) the Center of Den Ham offers lots of activities. During these “Hammer Brinkdagen” you can enjoy the special children’s market in the morning and in the afternoon from 16:00 hour you are able to visit a local market with swinging MOP orchestras and a lot of other special festivities. A spectacular Street Theatre is part of the 3rd Brinkdag for several years now.
